Dr. Charles Allen Woodruff, 89, of Burlington, died Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at the RidgeView Assisted Living in Burlington.
Born September 25, 1931, in Grandview, IA, he was the son of Leonard Levi and Grace Marie Bennett Woodruff. He graduated from Burlington High School in 1949, Burlington Junior College in 1951, the University of Iowa in 1953 and the Iowa School of Dentistry in 1959.
Dr. Woodruff served as a lifeguard at the newly opened pool in Middletown the summer following his high school graduation. The next four summers he served as a utilities worker at the Iowa Ordnance Plant. While at the University of Iowa, he was a member of the Iowa Wrestling Squad. From October 1953 to August 1955, Dr. Woodruff served in the United States Army. On August 21, 1954 he married Sylvia J. Gidlund. They later divorced.
Dr. Woodruff practiced dentistry in the area from 1959 until his retirement in 2010. He was a member of the Burlington Dental Association
An avid bridge player, he started the Burlington Bridge Club in January 1960. He enjoyed tournament bridge, playing in many tournaments in Iowa and Illinois. He was a Gold Life Master.
Dr. Woodruff enjoyed his family and friends, reading, studying the Bible and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed traveling, visiting all 50 states and five continents. He enjoyed keeping track of his high school classmates and was active in planning many class reunions.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Woodruff of Burlington, and Roger Woodruff of Longmont, CO; two daughters, Linda (Mark) Blakesley of Westminster, CO, and Beth (Warren) Spring of Parker, CO; seven grandchildren, Tyler, Jordan, and Sienna Spring, Kambree Blakesley, Michelle, Eric, and Alan Woodruff; one great-grandchild, Cece Jo; one brother, Leonard (Georganna) Woodruff of Ft. Dodge, IA; one sister, Marjory Knoche of California; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Story and special friend, Virginia Baumunk Krueger.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
There will be no visitation or services.
